THE PROJECT
The Porthos CO2 transport and storage project is the European Union's first large-scale carbon capture initiative—designed to transport 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually from Rotterdam's industrial area to depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea. Allseas' pipelaying vessel Lorelay is installing the 20-kilometer, 16-inch offshore pipeline connecting the Maasvlakte compressor station to the P18-A storage platform.
Portside Media was hired by Porthos to document a press day aboard Lorelay—bringing national news media, project stakeholders, and industry representatives offshore to witness active pipelaying operations. The assignment: capture the vessel, the pipelaying process, and onboard operations from both aerial and ground perspectives, with immediate turnaround for news media deadlines.
Scope:
Drone footage of Lorelay and offshore pipelaying operations
Onboard photography of vessel operations and press event activities
Edited photo deliverables for Porthos communications
Video content for national news media (same-day turnaround)
Video content for Allseas and Porthos stakeholder use

THE CHALLENGE
Offshore Operations from an Active Vessel
This wasn't filming at a static location. Lorelay is a working offshore pipelaying vessel actively installing critical infrastructure 20 kilometers from shore. Documenting operations required:
Maritime Environment:
Flying drones from a moving vessel in open water
North Sea weather conditions and wind exposure
Coordination with vessel crew and offshore operations team
Safety protocols for working on an active pipelaying platform
Press Event Timing Constraints:
Single-day visit window (no opportunity for reshoot or return)
National news media on tight broadcast deadlines
Multiple stakeholders requiring different content outputs
Capturing operational sequences as pipelaying progressed in real-time
Multi-Audience Deliverables:
Immediate video cuts for news media covering the story that evening
Edited photography for Porthos project communications
Separate video content for Allseas showcasing vessel capabilities
Coordinating across three distinct client needs from one shoot
DELIVERABLES
For National News Media:
Edited video content delivered same-day for broadcast deadlines
Aerial footage of Lorelay and active pipelaying operations
For Porthos Project:
Professional photography of vessel operations
Raw video content for stakeholder communications and public relations
Visual documentation of the EU's first offshore CO2 pipeline installation
For Allseas:
Video footage showcasing Lorelay's pipelaying capabilities
Offshore operational content for corporate movie
Operational Coordination:
Offshore safety compliance and vessel-based drone operations
Real-time coordination with Lorelay bridge and deck operations
Same-day editing and content delivery for media deadlines
THE RESULT
National news networks received broadcast-ready footage documenting the Porthos project and Lorelay's offshore operations—delivered the same day, meeting evening news deadlines. Porthos secured professional visual content for project communications showcasing the EU's first large-scale CO2 transport infrastructure. Allseas obtained operational footage of Lorelay's pipelaying capabilities for corporate use.
The press day coverage contributed to national visibility for carbon capture and storage initiatives in the Netherlands, providing the public and stakeholders with direct visual access to offshore operations typically unseen beyond industry circles.
