Offshore Construction Night Operations - Mammoet Schiedam
When weather forced a critical heavy-lift operation from day to night, PortSide Media secured last-minute clearances to document one of the world's largest cranes installing an A-frame for North Sea wind farm operations.
Project Details:
Client Sector: Offshore Wind / Heavy-Lift Operations
Location: Mammoet Yard, Schiedam, Netherlands

THE PROJECT
Installing Critical Infrastructure for Offshore Wind
Van Oord's Svanen is one of Europe's most capable offshore installation vessels, designed to install large monopiles for North Sea wind farms. This project documented the heavy-lift installation of a newly constructed A-frame—a critical deck structure that enables the vessel to handle the massive components required for offshore wind installations.
The operation utilized one of the world's largest mobile cranes at Mammoet's Schiedam facility, lifting and positioning the multi-ton A-frame with millimeter precision before its integration onto the Svanen's deck.

THE CHALLENGE
Last-Minute Night Operations in Controlled Airspace
Original plan: Daylight heavy-lift operation with standard drone documentation.
Reality: Heavy winds during the day made crane operations unsafe. The lift was postponed and rescheduled for night operations—requiring immediate coordination to secure:
CTR Rotterdam night-flight clearance (controlled airspace authorization)
Port authority night operations approval
Mammoet yard safety coordination (active heavy-lift zone)
Air traffic control notification (proximity to Rotterdam The Hague Airport)
Timeline: Clearance secured within hours, operations commenced after sunset.
DELIVERABLES
What We Provided
Regulatory Compliance:
CTR Rotterdam night-flight authorization secured
Port authority night operations clearance
Mammoet yard safety coordination and HSE approval
Real-time communication with air traffic control during operations
Visual Documentation:
Drone photography capturing the full scope of the heavy-lift operation
Night-time aerial footage showing crane positioning, A-frame installation, and operational context
Edited video for Van Oord and Mammoet social media and communications use
High-resolution imagery for stakeholder presentations and operational records
Operational Coordination:
Pre-flight safety briefing with Mammoet lift supervisors
Real-time communication with crane operators during filming
Adherence to safety exclusion zones and active lift protocols
Minimal disruption positioning throughout the operation
THE RESULT
Critical Infrastructure Documented, Zero Operational Delay
Van Oord and Mammoet received complete visual documentation of a complex night-time heavy-lift operation—captured under time pressure, in controlled airspace, with full regulatory compliance and zero impact on the operation itself.
The A-frame was successfully installed on Svanen's deck, the vessel returned to offshore wind installation operations in the North Sea, and the client had the visual content needed for internal records, stakeholder communications, and public-facing content showcasing their offshore wind capabilities.
