How We Got Here

My connection to maritime operations started long before I picked up a camera. As a small boy, I sat on my grandfather's lap overlooking the main entry to the Port of Rotterdam, watching ships arrive from around the world. The scale captivated me then—it still does now.

My photography journey began as a teenage hobbyist and evolved into formal training at the FotoAcademie in Rotterdam, where I studied documentary photography. After launching a freelance career covering everything from nightlife to weddings, I eventually burned out chasing work that didn't resonate. I sold my gear, stepped away, and focused on building a conventional career.

But the passion didn't fade. Four years later, I picked up a camera again—this time alongside my first drone. My wife and I traveled the world, and the work we produced landed publications in National Geographic Traveler and Lonely Planet. That reignited everything.

Returning to the Netherlands, I pursued full certification as a drone operator and began building a business around real estate photography. Driving the country, documenting properties for developers and realtors, I discovered something critical: proximity and speed matter. A partnership with a major Rotterdam realtor proved that being local, certified, and operationally fluent meant I could deliver when others couldn't.

Then, three years ago, the maritime industry came into focus. The sector I'd watched from my grandfather's balcony decades earlier became the work that made sense—visually compelling, operationally complex, and requiring the precision and reliability that define how I approach every project. It's been my primary focus ever since.

Built for Flexibility, Structured for Scale

Portside Media is structured as a partnership with Gijs Lokker, supported by a network of certified drone pilots, radio operators, cameramen, and photographers. This allows us to scale for larger projects—multiple cameras, extended time-lapses, simultaneous land and aerial coverage—while maintaining the consistency and operational awareness that defines our approach.

We're small enough to move fast. Large enough to handle complex, multi-day shoots. And experienced enough to know when to deploy solo and when to bring the full team.

Gijs's maritime background means he speaks the language of port operations, understands vessel movements and crane operations, and knows how to coordinate around active industrial workflows without disrupting client operations. This operational fluency is what allows Portside Media to work seamlessly inside shipyards, offshore vessels, and terminal facilities where timing and safety coordination are paramount. His experience includes: - Offshore platform operations and North Sea vessel work - Shipyard construction and heavy-lift coordination - Terminal operations and cargo handling environments - Multi-stakeholder project management across maritime sectors.

Visual Production

Beyond operational credentials, Gijs is an accomplished filmmaker and photographer specializing in industrial and maritime documentation. He understands how to capture scale, movement, and technical precision while maintaining visual composition under challenging conditions—whether documenting night operations, offshore filming in North Sea weather, or time-critical vessel arrivals.

Client Work

Gijs has collaborated on projects for Damen Shipyards, Mammoet, Port of Rotterdam terminal operators, offshore wind developers, and international shipping operators. His ability to coordinate complex shoots across multiple stakeholders—port authorities, vessel crews, crane operators, and safety teams—ensures projects proceed efficiently without operational delays.

Together with Robin Visser, Gijs ensures Portside Media delivers both operational reliability and visual excellence across Europe's maritime network.

WHY PORTSIDE MEDIA EXISTS

Operational Fluency in Active Environments

Most drone operators and visual content producers position themselves as creatives. We're the opposite. Portside Media was built specifically for clients who operate in environments where clearance alone isn't enough—you need a visual partner who understands production schedules, active berths, safety protocols, and the reality that operations don't pause for filming.

Our expertise as visual artists combined with our understanding of port logistics, shipyard workflows, and offshore coordination gives clients something rare: fast turnaround without compromising quality, and the confidence that we won't disrupt what's already in motion.

We're based in the Netherlands, within immediate reach of Europe's major maritime corridors—Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Vlissingen, Moerdijk, Antwerp, Zeebrugge. Our proximity to these hubs means we can mobilize quickly, coordinate directly with port authorities and yard teams, and deliver documentation that serves both operational and communications objectives.

Certified for Complex Operations

PortSide Media operates under full EASA Specific Category certification—as both a company and as certified pilots. This isn't standard recreational or basic commercial licensing. Specific Category authorization allows us to operate in controlled airspace, including the Port of Rotterdam's operational zones and areas affected by Rotterdam The Hague Airport's CTR.

We also hold:

  • Night flight exemptions for time-sensitive operations

  • VCA certification for work on construction sites and industrial environments

  • Full operational insurance covering maritime and offshore work

This means we can legally operate where most cannot. Ports, shipyards, offshore structures, and terminal zones all require specialized permissions—and we hold them..
