THE PROJECT

Damen Shipyards commissioned Portside Media to document the delivery of newly constructed tugs from Vietnam to Port of Antwerp. The tugs—transported as deck cargo aboard Jumbo Maritime's Jumbo Kinetic—required comprehensive visual documentation from North Sea arrival through final offloading at Antwerp.

Coverage Scope:

  • Vessel transit through North Sea Port area (Belgian maritime operations)

  • Passage through Terneuzen locks (cross-border North Sea Port zone)

  • Drone filming across Scheldt waterway approach to Port of Antwerp

  • Lock operations at Antwerp Sluizen (Antwerp lock complex)

  • Arrival and positioning at Antwerp offloading terminal

  • Tug offloading operations and deployment

THE CHALLENGE

Cross-Border Maritime Documentation (Netherlands-Belgium)

The route spanned two countries and three distinct port authority jurisdictions:

  • North Sea Port (Vlissingen/Terneuzen, Netherlands-Belgium)

  • Scheldt waterway transit (international shipping corridor)

  • Port of Antwerp (Belgium's largest port)

Each required separate airspace coordination, filming permissions, and operational protocols.

Multiple Controlled Airspace Zones

Filming across two days required coordinating:

North Sea Port CTR – Controlled airspace for Terneuzen area and lock approaches
Port of Antwerp CTR – Controlled airspace affected by Antwerp Airport proximity

Upfront coordination with air traffic control, port authorities, and vessel traffic services across the full transit route.

Transit-Based Filming Schedule

Vessel movement dictated filming windows. Lock schedules, tidal timing, and waterway traffic determined when and where the Jumbo Kinetic would be positioned. No opportunity to reschedule or repeat shots—the transit happened once, over two days, on the vessel's operational timeline.

DELIVERABLES

Visual Documentation:

  • High-end drone photography capturing vessel transit, lock operations, and tug positioning

  • Edited video of complete two-day operation (North Sea Port arrival → Antwerp offloading)

  • Aerial perspectives of Jumbo Kinetic transiting waterways and lock systems

  • Tug delivery and offloading sequences at Port of Antwerp

Operational Content:

  • Lock passage documentation (Terneuzen and Antwerp Sluizen)

  • Waterway transit sequences along Scheldt approach

  • Vessel positioning and terminal arrival at Port of Antwerp

  • Cargo offloading operations and tug deployment

Regulatory Coordination:

  • EASA Specific Category authorization across North Sea Port and Port of Antwerp CTR zones

  • Port authority permissions (North Sea Port, Port of Antwerp)

  • Real-time communication with Port Authorities during transit

THE RESULT

Damen Shipyards received comprehensive visual documentation of a cross-border tug delivery operation—captured across two days as newly built tugs traveled from Vietnam to their final deployment at Port of Antwerp.

The content delivered high-end drone photography and edited video suitable for client communications, stakeholder presentations, and marketing showcasing Damen's global tug construction and delivery capabilities.

Zero operational delays. Complete coordination across two countries, three port authorities, and multiple controlled airspace zones.
