THE PROJECT

Expanding Terminal Capacity at Maasvlakte

RWG Terminal's Maasvlakte facility is a critical node in Rotterdam's container handling infrastructure. This project documented the delivery of new container handling cranes—manufactured in China and shipped to Rotterdam for installation as part of the terminal's expansion and modernization.

Portside Media was engaged by Eyecatchers to provide drone operations capturing early morning vessel arrival at Maasvlakte, approach and docking at the RWG quay that would see these massive cranes positioned for terminal integration.

The documentation was intended for RWG Terminal's internal and stakeholder communication.

THE CHALLENGE

Early morning light conditions – Filming during dawn required adaptability to changing natural light

  1. Active terminal operations – RWG's terminal continued standard operations during the delivery; drone positioning had to account for ongoing cargo handling, vehicle movements, and personnel activity

  2. Vessel coordination – Docking sequences involve tugboats, pilot vessels, and terminal coordination; filming required awareness of active maritime traffic and operational zones

  3. Scale and positioning – Container handling cranes are massive structures; capturing their scale while documenting docking operations required strategic positioning and awareness of safe operating distances
